PRP Q&A

What is PRP for skin rejuvenation?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a revitalizing substance that aids with healing. It contains growth factors from your blood that initiate the recovery process.

PRP skin rejuvenation can minimize features like:

  • Large, visible pores
  • Scars and acne scars
  • Sunken under eyes
  • Smile lines and other wrinkles

The growth factors and proteins in PRP cause your skin to produce more collagen, a structural fiber that makes your skin youthful and firm. Collagen naturally diminishes in your skin as you get older but PRP skin rejuvenation can bring some of it back.

What is PRP for hair loss?

If you’re going bald or if your hair is thinning, PRP injections into the scalp can revitalize old and inactive hair follicles. PRP may help promote better blood flow to help your follicles heal and activate.

There’s a multitude of reasons why your hair might be falling out, including genetic hair loss (male- or female-pattern baldness). The team at Philadelphia Center for Anti-Aging can review your medical history and find out why you’re losing your hair. They can then determine whether or not PRP is an appropriate and effective choice for treatment.

You may need several rounds of PRP injections for your scalp before you start seeing the return of your natural hair growth. PRP might allow you to forego hair transplantation surgery.

How is PRP obtained for treatment?

The PRP used in your hair or skin rejuvenation procedure contains your own cells. While it comes from your own blood, an unprocessed blood sample isn’t yet ready for injection.

After the team at Philadelphia Center for Anti-Aging extracts a blood sample, they place the sample in a centrifuge for processing. The machine spins the sample rapidly, which causes the cells and other components within your blood to separate into layers of like cells.

One of the resulting layers contains just blood platelets suspended in plasma with no red or white blood cells. The team isolates this layer and prepares it for your PRP treatments.
